Heat treatment of steel – the process of changing the structure of steel while it heating with subsequent temperature lowering at a certain speed.
Heat treatment of steel causes to significant changes in its properties, whereas chemical composition remains the same.
PJSC Ukrenergoremont uses a special heat-treating equipment: shaft, glowing and batch furnaces.
Thermal treatment (heat treatment) provides certain mechanical properties of steel products, such as high hardness, which increases the resistance to wear; less brittleness to improve processing or to enhance the toughness and other.
For proper heat treatment is necessary to select the correct temperature range, depending on the grade of steel.
Heat treatment of steel is divided into the following types:
- annealing
- hardening
- output
- normalization
Annealing - a heat treatment of steel which is performed by heating it and then slow cooling down. This kind of heat treatment is also divided into different types, which depend on the heating temperature, the cooling rate of the steel.
Hardening - heat treatment of steel, which causes recrystallizing by heating to a temperature above the critical. At this temperature, the steel is held, and then rapidly cooled. Consequently, it becomes hardened and obtains nonequilibrium structure, so it is used the following type of heat treatment of steel.
Output – heat treatment of steel, which is carried out after hardening. Performed in order to reduce or remove residual stress in the steel while increasing viscosity and decreasing the hardness and brittleness of the steel.
Normalizing - heat treatment of steel is similar to annealing. Their difference is that the normalisation of the steel is air-cooled, and during annealing - in the furnace.
